Many turn a blind eye to the harsh realities that animals endure on a daily basis. It's easy to forget that these creatures are sentient beings, meaning they have the capacity to experience positive and negative feelings such as pleasure, joy pain and distress.
The first step in helping animals is to learn about the different ways they are suffering. Education is key in creating empathy and compassion for these creatures. Once you understand the reality of animal cruelty, you can take action to help prevent it.
The dog meat trade is an international scandal that takes place in South Korea, Indonesia and China. Dogs are killed every year by the millions for their meat. The animals are often beaten and skinned alive, and sometimes they are boiled or blow-torched whilst alive. This is a brutal and inhumane trade that needs to be stopped.
Cats are subjected to the same horrors as dogs. Like the dog meat festivals, they're crammed into wire cages and driven for hours or days to slaughterhouses and markets. They're frequently sick or injured, and many die on the journey from dehydration, shock, suffocation, and heatstroke. Those who survive the trip are then beaten to death,
Rhino poaching is most often carried out to satisfy the strong demand for their horns in Asian countries. The horns are primarily utilised in Traditional Chinese Medicine but are increasingly being seen as an indication of status and prosperity. It is an inhumane act and the Rhino is usually left to suffer and die, sometimes at the wings of its offspring watching them die unable to help and not knowing why.
Similar to Rhinos, Elephants are also poached for their ivory tusks. A single tusk can sell for $10,000 on the black market, so it’s no wonder that this majestic creature is being hunted to extinction. It’s estimated that 96 elephants are killed every day for their ivory. That’s one elephant every 15 minutes.
Lions, tigers, and leopards are trophy-hunted for their bones, skins, and other body parts which are then sold on the black market. A single tiger’s skin can sell for up to $10,000, while the bones of a lion can fetch $3,000. This unsustainable hunting has led to a 96% decline in lion populations in the last 50 years.
Harp seals are killed each year for their fur. They’re typically shot or clubbed to death, and their blood is then drained from their bodies. The majority of the seals who are killed are just a few months old, and many of them are still nursing. Seals are also hunted for their meat, which is considered a delicacy in some parts of the world.
Whales are killed each year for their meat, blubber, and oil. They’re often harpooned or killed with explosives, and they can take up to 20 minutes to die. In some instances, the whales are cut open while they’re still alive in order to extract their organs and blood. This is a barbaric and inhumane practice that needs to be stopped.
